Get to know the El Campanil Theatre

When CCMT returns for its first musical production in over two years, it will be on a new (to us) stage – the El Campanil Theatre! After decades of wonderful shows at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, we are trying something new!

While we will always love the Lesher (and plan to return in 2023), we thought it was important to bring our musicals to different cities across Contra Costa County. We want to reach new audiences, attract new talent and celebrate all the unique theaters our county has to offer.

For those who are not familiar with the El Campanil, trust us when we say it is truly a jewel and a fabulous piece of Bay Area history. When it opened in 1928, the El Campanil served as a venue for both vaudeville shows and movies. Among the performers to appear at the theater were Roy Rogers, Mary Pickford, and Donald O’Connor. To this day, the dressing rooms are adorned with hundreds of autographs from decades of local and national performers.

Interested in learning more? We have a great video featuring CCMT’s very own Marty Newton and the El Campanil Theater’s Executive Director, Joel Roster, with even more information. Check out this chat between these two old friends and theatre lovers as they share more information about the theater, CCMT’s production of the “25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee”, and much more.

Enjoy!
